名詞構文（S+V+O）-- by主語 + 所有格目的語 --

by で主語をあらわす場合、目的語を所有格で表すことができます。

 

1. Columbus discovered America.

    -->

    今までの説明で名詞のカタマリ化をするなら

　 Columbus' discovery of America や the discovery of America by Columbus

    the discovery by Columbus of America などが作れそうですが、

　 America's discovery by Columbus が可能ということになります。

 

2. My parents accepted my girlfriend. 

    --> 

    my parents' acceptance of my girlfriend / the acceptance of my girlfriend

    by my parents / the acceptance by my parents of my girlfriend

    my girlfriend's acceptance by my parents

 

3. The president excluded Mr. Tanaka from the union.

     -->

    the president's exclusion of Mr. Tanaka from the union

    the exclusion by the president of Mr. Tanaka from the union

    Mr. Tanaka's exclusion by president from the union

 

一応、このように作った名詞のカタマリは、法則上作成可能ですが、ネイティブによってはあまり言わないよ、という人がいるかもしれません。一つ一つ、自分で検証してみることが大切です。
